The strength of Brotherhood Synagogue lies in our dedicated and active membership.
While supported by an excellent team of clergy and professional staff, our committed member volunteers are the heart and soul of Brotherhood —the ones who make things happen and lift us to new levels.
Please read more about our committees and their activities and consider volunteering for one or more of them!
Adult Eudcation Committee
"Respect those who can teach you, and seek ways to be close to them." —Pirket Avot
The Adult Education Committee is dedicated to fostering lifelong learning and spiritual growth within our community. We offer a variety of educational opportunities for adults to deepen their knowledge and connection to Jewish traditions, text, and values. In 2020, we transitioned many of our classes to a virtual setting to allow for us to find teachers from all over the world and allow flexibility for our community.

Chesed Committee
Chesed is a Hebrew word often translated as "loving-kindness." The Brotherhood Synagogue's Chesed Committee aims to provide help and compassion to Brotherhood members in their times of need.

Development Committee
Our primary goal is to raise money for the Annual Fund through mailings, personal solicitations, and more. We also try to work with other committees to create greater appreciation for our synagogue within the community and, in doing so, attract new members, initiate new programs and, consequently, raise yet more for the Synagogue. The more "development" we engage in, the more the synagogue benefits.

Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds, including construction and real estate, and some were involved in the renovation of the building ten years ago. We strive to keep Brotherhood looking sharp and operating as efficiently as possible.

Racial Justice Committee
The Brotherhood Racial Justice Committee (RJC) was established with the mission of working towards reducing racial bias and the effects of racial bias in ourselves, our congregation, our city, our state, and the country as a whole by providing learning and action opportunities for Brotherhood congregants and the community at large to join us in the endeavors.

Social Action Committee
Embodying the Hebrew expression tikkun olam — the healing and repairing of our world — the Social Action Committee (SAC) organizes our homeless shelter during the winter months, runs clothing, food, book, and blood drives, arranges for visits to area cemeteries for those in need of transportation, and provides educational programs on a variety of subjects including veterans issues, hunger, healing and visiting the sick, the environment and more. Under SAC sponsorship, Brotherhood recently joined the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition, a nationwide group of nearly 200 synagogues and Jewish organizations convened by Adamah (formerly Hazon), committing to creating annual goals for our community that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as mobilize our community around climate action. For more information or to volunteer, please email socialaction@brotherhoodsynagogue.org
In cooperation with the SAC and the RJC (Racial Justice Committee), the Brotherhood Committee on the Refugee and Immigration Crisis (BCRIC) was founded several years ago to promote social justice for refugees, asylees, and undocumented immigrants through education, advocacy, and relief. Main projects include monthly dinners at Brotherhood for asylum-seeker families with children in NYC public schools; preparation and distribution of gift packages with seasonal clothing and games and toys for children; and expansion of our advocacy campaigns in conjunction with HIAS and the Synagogue Coalition for the Refugee and Immigration Crisis (SCRIC).
