12:00 PM - 1:30 PMWhile at Columbia Law School, a student from Germany tried to start a club to oppose antisemitism — but was rejected — the only club rejected that school year. Come hear her story.
Long before antisemitism erupted on college campuses, Marie-Alice Legrand, who grew up in Germany, knew what it could lead to for Jews. Like all schoolchildren in modern Germany, Legrand was taught from an early age about the Holocaust. It shaped her Columbia experience.
During her last year of law school everything changed after Israel was attacked on October 7. “There was not one ounce of sympathy or compassion extended to my Jewish and Israeli friends.” She decided to assemble a group of students, Jews and non-Jews alike, to create a new campus club, Law Students Against Antisemitism. They drafted a charter laying out their objectives: to raise awareness of historical and contemporary antisemitism, to foster dialogue, and to provide support for students targeted by antisemitism. Law Students Against Antisemitism was rejected.
Legrand knows only too well how tenacious antisemitism can be, and she knows that in the fight against antisemitism, surrender can be fatal.
Join us to hear her story. Brunch will be served.
