Meet with Cantor Yager — Discuss Level of Involvement

Approximately 15 months prior to your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, you and your child should schedule a meeting with Cantor Yager  to discuss the plan for preparing for your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Generally, at a minimum a Bar/Bat Mitzvah child will learn the following for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah:

  1. The Haftorah assigned for the date of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah (including the blessings before and after);
  2. The maftir portion of that week’s Torah portion (including the blessings before and after);
  3. The Shma and Veahavta; and
  4. Aleinu

As an option after a discussion with the Cantor, your child may want to add the following additional portions/prayers:

  1. Additional portions of the Torah;
  2. Portions of the Musaf Service;
  3. Ashrei;
  4. Amidah; and
  5. Adon Olam.

Additionally, we encourage your child to commence celebration of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah weekend by participating in our Friday evening service and chanting the following prayers:

  1. Aleinu;
  2. Kiddush; and
  3. Hamotzi.
